This Tomato Orzo recipe is the perfect side dish loaded with flavor and taste. Simple ingredients make this easy side a fast and delicious option for any weeknight meal.
If you are a fan of pasta and rice, more than likely, you will enjoy the taste and texture of Orzo. While most people actually think that Orzo is rice, it's a small pasta instead.
The great part about cooking this type of pasta dish is that it's versatile in the type of seasonings and ingredients that can be added. I love adding tomatoes to this orzo pasta because the texture really goes well together.
While you can add a protein to pair with it if you want, you really don't have to. Eating it as is or even adding some extra vegetables to the dish is always a great option, too.
I've made and served this at family dinners, outdoor BBQs, and just simple meals at home, and it really does pair with just about anything and everything.

Ingredients
Olive oil - This is what is used to saute the ingredients on the stovetop.
Onion - Slice and cut up either sweet onions or white onions.
Garlic cloves - Minced garlic would work as well.
Orzo - You can buy this at your local store in the pasta aisle.
Grape tomatoes - Cherry tomatoes would work just as fine, too.
Chicken broth - Bone broth of chicken stock would be a good option also.
Tomato paste - I always make sure that I'm adding paste without any added sugar.
Salt and pepper - To taste.
How to Make Tomato Orzo
Step One: Add the oil to a large skillet and heat it.
Step Two: Add the garlic and onion, and sauté until they are softened.
Step Three: Add the tomatoes and orzo and cook until the orzo is lightly browned.
Step Four: Add the salt and pepper and the chicken broth to the pan.
Step Five: Simmer until the orzo is tender. This will take about 8 minutes.
Step Six: Stir in the tomato paste and serve. As it cools, it will start to thicken up a bit as well. This isn't an overly thick dish, but it might be a bit more liquid in the beginning, when it is at the hottest point.
Variations
Add seasonings - While I stick to salt and black pepper, you can always change it up. Add some red pepper flakes for heat, or squeeze some lemon juice on top right before serving. You can also add capers as a topping and fresh basil, too.
Add protein - For a one-dish meal add some cooked chicken, sausage, or chickpeas for a vegetarian main course. You can even cook the sausage or diced chicken along with the onions and garlic in the first step. Then just remove from the pan and add back before serving. We serve it along with our Smoked Lamb Shank.
Common Questions
Is orzo a good substitute for rice?
Yes, it can be. It all just depends on what you are craving and what you want to make. I often make this as an alternative to salads because you can actually eat this recipe hot or cold.
If you don't have rice or don't care for rice, using orzo can be a great option because it's a similar texture, but a much different flavor.
Can I use tomato sauce instead of tomato paste?
No, it's important to pay attention to the instructions and use the paste. This adds richness and thickness to the dish, which really makes it unique and stands out.
If you can only use sauce, there will be a variance in the outcome of the dish. Typically, a sauce will make more liquid since it's thinner, which will change its presentation and taste.
Is orzo high in carbs?
Since it's pasta, it is going to be higher in carbs and calories. Orzo pasta salad isn't low in carbs, but it is high in flavor. If you have someone who is trying to watch their carb intake, this isn't going to be the best option for them.
What topping can I add?
I love adding parmesan cheese, shredded cheese, and sometimes even diced bacon. The fun part about making this recipe is that the toppings can change it up each time.
If you want a little bit of crunch with your pasta, even adding some fried onions on top would be a crazy good addition as well. Just remember that when you are storing leftovers, whatever topping you add will be stored with the dish. If it's a crunchy topping, it isn't going to stay crunchy when eaten as a leftover.
The way to get around that is to add toppings to your individual serving or add fresh new toppings the next time you serve and eat.
