This Smoked Green Bean Casserole is one of the best sides. Everyone knows that the best way to complement an epic meal is to have an easy side to go along with it. You can enjoy this for the holiday season or any other month of the year. It's full of flavor, versatile, and delicious.

It's hard to make the classic green bean casserole recipe any better, but I think I've cracked the code. You still get those same delicious crispy onions with this method, but with the hint of that perfect smoky flavor. Out of all the smoker recipes I make, this one just might be the easiest.

Ingredients
- Green beans - I use thawed frozen green beans. You can use fresh green beans, but they will need to be lightly steamed before adding.
- French fried onions - Used both in the casserole and as a topping.
- Cream of mushroom soup - Adds flavor and creaminess.
- Sour cream - Also adds creaminess and a bit of tangy flavor.
- Milk - Helps to thin out the beans and soup mixture.
- Salt - Adds flavor.
- Garlic powder - For taste.
See recipe card for quantities.

How to Make Smoked Green Bean Casserole
Preheat the smoker to 250 degrees. Grease an 8X8 casserole dish.

Step One: Mix all the sauce ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

Step Two: Fold in the green beans and ½ cup of the fried onions. Reserve the remaining French-fried onions for the topping.

Step Three: Add the mixture to the baking dish and then top with the rest of the fried onions.

Step Four: Put the pan into the smoker and smoke until hot and bubbly. This will take about an hour.
Top tip
If the top of the green bean mixture is getting too dark and you're losing that golden brown color while smoking, cover it with aluminum foil. This will slow the top from overcooking.
Substitutions
- Greek yogurt - You can use this as a replacement for the sour cream.
- Vegetables - You can use any vegetable in place of the green beans for a fantastic casserole. We also like this with broccoli and cauliflower.
Variations
- Seasonings - Add other flavors that you would like. You can add some onion powder, black pepper, garlic salt, or even some cayenne pepper to boost spice levels.
- Cheese - If you want to add a bit of shredded cheddar cheese to the top, you can sprinkle on a bit at the end and let it melt. This adds a nice flavor.
- Topping - You can also crush up pork rinds and add them to the top of this green bean casserole, too.

Equipment
To make this smoked casserole, you'll need to have a baking pan or casserole dish, a large bowl, and your smoker. I also stir with a slotted spoon, but that's optional.
Storage
If you're lucky enough to have leftover green bean casserole, make sure to let it cool down to room temperature, and then store it in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge. When it's time to eat, reheat it completely and enjoy.
I don't recommend freezing this for later because of the added dairy and soup mixture. Once that thaws and unthaws, it will change the texture of the recipe too much.

Common Questions
I've made and served this so many different ways. It's been a delicious option for our Thanksgiving dinner, and really, any holiday dinner. Pairing it with some smoked turkey creates perfect results. You can also serve this a summer BBQ, or just as an easy way to create a side for when the craving hits.
That's up to you. If you're making this in the summer months and you have access to garden fresh green beans, that's a simple way to add a whole other level of taste and flavor.
