There is nothing like a great-tasting Spicy Skinny Margarita Recipe on a hot summer afternoon. Jalapeno Simple syrup adds a great kick to this classic cocktail.
Skinny?
Here's the deal. It seems everyone is doing something to get a better handle on their health. I know people doing full-blown Keto, staying away from dairy, cutting out all gluten, not using that much sugar, or just limiting calories to lose some weight. Skinny in this Spicy Margarite recipe, just means we are not using sugar. The jalapeño simple syrup that we use does not need sugar, instead, we are using a natural sweetener mixed with water to create the base for our simple syrup. There are three simple ingredients: xylitol, erythritol, and stevia.
Ingredients
Tequila -I love the look of a beautiful silver cocktail. I always have silver tequila at home. One of my favorite summer evening sipping drinks is two ounces of silver tequila over ice with a slice of lime. You can feel free to use whatever tequila you have on hand.
Triple Sec - If you are familiar with this bar staple, it is used in several different classic cocktails. From margaritas to cosmopolitans. It is an orange-flavored liqueur. It is made from sun-dried orange skins and liquor. If you don't have triple sec you can use either orange curacao or Cointreau. If you are all out of orange liquor or are just trying to lower the alcohol abv of the drink, a splash of orange juice to get that slight orange taste.
Lime Juice - Freshly squeezed lime juice is the best. Fresh lime is ideal because we also want to use a lime wedge to make a nice garnish. You can use a citrus juicer for the limes or even a muddler will work. Drop the limes into your cocktail shaker and muddle the lime to get as much juice from it as you can. If you don't have fresh lime, store-bought lime juice will work in a pinch but I always recommend fresh lime juice if you have it.
Jalapeno Simple Syrup - If you want to try your margarita spicy, this is the secret weapon. Making your own is very simple. You are going to take jalapeno slices and soak them in your sugar-free simple syrup. Add more jalapeno slices if you want it spicier, or let it sit in the refrigerator for a few days to really get the spice level up. Most spicy margarita mixes available for purchase will have several additives and a lot of added sugars and I haven't seen a skinny margarita mix that jalapeno to create the spice.
Ice cubes - It is your call if you are going to make your jalapeño margarita recipe frozen or on the rocks. My wife prefers her margarita to go into the blender for a frozen margarita. I like mine on the rocks and I always have my cocktail shaker ready to go.
Salt - This is optional. I always love the salted rim for my margaritas. Having large sea salt makes the presentation look great. Simply dip the rim of the glass in lime juice or rub the rim of your glass with a slice of lime. Then roll the rim in a small bowl of salt. Give the glass a little shake over the sink to remove any extra salt. We don't want a salty skinny spicy margarita.
Sugar-Free Jalapeno Simple Syrup Instructions
You must make this first. Combine equal parts of your natural sweetener and boiling water. Stir together to dissolve all of the sweetener. Add your jalapeno pepper slices and sit in the syrup until it reaches your desired spiciness. You can make this a few days ahead so that it is ready for when you want your jalapeno margarita. I always keep a few extra jalapeño slices to the side to be used as a garnish for my
Skinny Jalapeno Margarita Recipe
To make this on the rocks:
Step one: Add crushed ice or cubes to a cocktail shaker. Pour in your fresh lime juice, triple sec, tequila, and jalapeno simple syrup mixture.
Step Two: Cover the shaker and shake vigorously for about 10 seconds. Then pour it into your rocks glass. Garnish with a slice of lime and a slice of jalapeno.
To make this skinny spicy margarita recipe frozen:
Step one: Add ice and all other ingredients directly into your blender and blend until a slushy consistency.
Step two: Pour into your margarita or cocktail glass and garnish with lime and jalapeno.
Flavoring Tip: If you want to increase the level of sweetness of the margarita without increasing the heat from the jalapenos, you can add some of the natural sweetener mixture directly to the blender or shaker.
