Cool, creamy, and delicious this is the best onion dip I have ever had. Using smoked onions to make this classic really kicks it up to a whole new level. You need to try this smoked onion dip as soon as possible!
Who doesn't like onion dip? Alright, I am sure there are at least a handful of people who have not fully experienced the joys of onion dip. But come on! There is nothing like a yummy dip that makes you want to just eat it with a spoon. You know what I mean. The chip or veggie is solely present to help you to scoop as large a dip as possible into your mouth.
Here we have a timeless classic, onion dip, and we kick it up to another level by using smoked onions. You will love the added depth of flavor that this brings. As the summer months roll in, be sure to include this as an appetizer or side dish to your backyard barbeques.
This is also a great option if you are serving it on a hot day when people are looking for some cool lighter fare to enjoy. And once you have your smoked onions, it takes less than 10 minutes total time to prepare. Choosing the dippers that you are going to use can also add some variety to the dish as well.
How to Make Smoked Onion Dip
This is very easy and requires no cook time if you already have smoked onions on hand.
Step One: Gather all the ingredients. Put the smoked onions, mayo, yogurt (or sour cream), swiss cheese, and salt into a food processor and pulse until smooth and creamy.
Step Two: Put it into a serving dish or bowl and set it out for your guests.
Substitutions & Additions
Cheese - if you don't care for Swiss cheese you can use mild or sharp cheddar, mozzarella, or even blue cheese or feta. Just adjust the salt amount you add if you choose a saltier cheese.
Garlic - sub in some smoked garlic for all or part of the onions. This creamy dip is just as good when made with garlic.
Grilled Onions - if you don't have a smoker you can grill your onions and add a dash of liquid smoke or smoked paprika to mimic the smokey flavor that you get when smoking the onions.
Fresh Black Pepper - love pepper? Crack some into this creamy dip.
How to Store Homemade Dips
This dip does keep well in the fridge, so if you are making a good amount, feel free to put some into your serving dish and the rest into a container with a sealed lid and store on the refrigerator for up to a week. I personally like to make this dip and let it sit in the fridge for 24 hours as all the flavors blend together.
How to Serve Onion Dip
If you are trying to stay low carb and healthy then by all means an assortment of veggies or these Everything Bagel Keto Crackers are perfect. You can also use potato or tortilla chips as well or serve it in a pumpernickel bread bowl with the bread pieces to be used for dipping. Have fun trying different dippers and enjoy! You can also serve this with your smoked jalapeno poppers or bacon-wrapped mini peppers.
Other Uses For Smoked Onion Dip
Hot Dip - You can also transform this into a hot dip for those colder months. After your process, all the ingredients in the food processor transfer to an oven-safe serving dish. Then add another ½ cup of shredded or sliced cheese to the top and bake it on 350F for 20 - 25 minutes until it is hot and bubbly.
Salad Dressing - Use this as a delicious dressing for a green salad or a potato or pasta salad.
Sandwich Condiment - You can use this as a sandwich spread or a burger topping. We love it on our smoked turkey burgers. You can also just use this as a drizzle for veggies you are pulling off the grill. It is also amazing with deli turkey and swiss cheese on this sun dried tomato protein bread recipe.
The variety of uses are really endless. If you come up with some new awesome uses and applications for this homemade dip please drop them in the comments below or share them with us on social media. We would love to hear some of your ideas. I hope you enjoy it!

Where do you get the smoked onions?
Paul & Taryn
You need to make them. I've never seen them in a store. If you don't have a smoker you could try sauteeing or roasting the onions and then adding smoked paprika for a smoky flavor.
