Ingredients
- Ground beef - Cook the beef in a cast iron skillet until browned, and be sure to drain off any excess grease.
- Chopped jalapeños - Wear gloves with dicing so that you don't burn your eyes or hands.
- Tater tots - Frozen tots added to the top give an excellent crunchy texture.
- Cream of mushroom soup - This adds a creaminess to the casserole. This is the only ingredient that might contain gluten. If you would like this casserole to be gluten-free simply use a canned creamy soup that is already gluten-free.
- Evaporated milk - Helps to thin out the addition of the soup so it's not too thick.
- Cream cheese - Softened cream cheese mixes in easiest. It gives a rich and creamy texture.
- Sour cream - Pairs well with cream cheese.
- Garlic salt - Adds a nice salty flavor to the dish. If you don't have prepared garlic salt, you can mix equal parts garlic powder and salt. A blend with black pepper will also work.
- Cheddar cheese - We like using sharp cheddar cheese for the most flavor. But you can also use colby jack, mozzarella, or a Mexican blend.
- Jalapeno slices - Fresh jalapeños offer the best taste.

How to Make a Jalapeno Popper Tater Tot Casserole
Step One: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Step Two: In a skillet, brown the ground beef with the jalapeño peppers. Stir as they cook. It is helpful to break up the meat with a potato masher.

Step Three: Put the cooked beef into a greased 9X13 casserole dish.

Step Four: Cover the top of the beef with tater tots. It is ok if they are on top of each other a bit but do the best you can to make a single layer of tater tots.

Step Five: Combine cream cheese, milk, soup, and sour cream together in a medium bowl. Pour that mixture on top of the casserole.

Step Six: Sprinkle cheese on top.

Step Seven: Top with sliced peppers, if desired.

Step Eight: Put in the oven and bake for 1 hour.

- Change the cheese - You can use sharp cheddar cheese, a Mexican cheese blend, or any other cup cheese blend that you like. They all pair perfectly with this great recipe.

Common Questions
Why is my Tater Tot casserole runny?
Casserole recipes shouldn't be runny, so if this is the case, make sure that you drain off any excess grease from the beef mixture after cooking it.
What is a good side dish with jalapeno popper tater tot casserole?
You can't go wrong with a green salad. You can also serve up a side of fresh fruit as well for a light and sweet flavor addition.

How do I store leftovers of this jalapeño tater tot casserole recipe?
Since this makes a big meal, you'll likely have leftovers of this family favorite. Let the dish cool down to room temperature, and then store leftovers in an airtight container. When it's time to reheat, you can pop it in the microwave or back in the oven to warm up all the way through.
Can I add toppings to this simple casserole?
There is always room to add more shredded cheese and sliced jalapenos on top. You can also add diced green onions for flavor and taste, as well. A dollop of sour cream would also be a delicious option and easy to add as you go.
Setting out some popular topping choices and letting each person pick their toppings is a fun way to vary the serving options.
Can I make this keto?
For those of you who do eat low carb, you can alter this to fit the keto diet as well by omitting the tater tots and subbing in cauliflower rice on top of the recipe. While I think that they're one of the best parts of the dish, they can be removed so that it's low in carbs for all to enjoy. You should also swap out the canned soup for additional sour cream or mayo and the milk for heavy cream. Or simply try this jalapeno popper hasselback chicken.
