We love the hashbrown casserole from Cracker Barrel. I took my version of that recipe and added protein to make it a one-dish dinner! The first time you make this ground beef casserole, it definitely won't be the last. It's one of those amazing recipes that shows how versatile it can be to appeal to any palate.

Ingredients
- Ground beef - The star of this easy dinner. You can use lean ground beef or your preferred type. If there is excess grease, drain it before adding the meat to the casserole dish.
- Onion - Chop it into small pieces. Dried onion flakes can work in a pinch if you don't have yellow onion.
- Cheddar cheese - You can use pre-shredded or shred your own for a better flavor.
- Hashbrowns - Save time and use frozen hash browns.
- Sour cream - Adds moisture to the casserole.
- Milk - Combined with the sour cream and mayo makes a creamy sauce.
- Mayonnaise - Adds a creamy texture and flavor.
- Garlic salt - For flavor.

Step Two: Mix the milk, mayonnaise, sour cream, half of the cheese, and garlic salt.

Step Three: Pour that mixture over the top of the casserole. Give it a gentle mix.

Step Four: Top with the remaining cheese.

Step Three: Put the baking dish in the oven and bake for 1 hour. Serve with green beans or other veggies of your choice.
Top tip
You can season the sauce to taste before adding it to the casserole. Since the shredded hashbrowns are unseasoned, you may want to make the sauce saltier than you would otherwise.
Substitutions
- Cream of chicken soup - If you want to use a soup base like cream or chicken or cream of mushroom soup, you can. This would be used instead of the mayo and some of the milk. It will change the flavor and texture, but it will add moisture to keep the casserole from drying out.
- Meat - Instead of using a ground beef mixture, you could use ground venison or ground turkey.
Variations
- Cheese - Other types of cheese, like Monterey Jack or Colby Jack cheese, can be used for this hamburger casserole.
- Seasonings - Adding garlic powder, onion powder, or red pepper flakes is a simple way to season this hearty meal.

Equipment
To make this hamburger hashbrown casserole, you'll want to have a large mixing bowl, a large casserole dish, and a large skillet for cooking and browning the meat.
Storage
Leftovers of this hashbrown casserole recipe should be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated. You could also cover the prepared pan with aluminum foil or plastic wrap for storage purposes.

Common Questions
Cooked ground beef can always be made ahead of time and then stored in the fridge until it's time to complete the meal. Just cook, drain the excess grease, and then keep it cold in the fridge until you are ready to assemble.
Absolutely. Shredding your own hashbrowns is simple enough to do, but it does take a lot longer than using frozen hashbrowns from the grocery store. Use a hand grater or food processor to shred the potatoes into thin strips. Squeeze the shreds dry to remove any excess water.

Kim Phelps says
This was a hit with my family. I did add a little salt and pepper before I mixed the ground beef and hash browns together. And added a little white pepper to the sour cream mixture. Poured that on, then lightly sprinkled cayenne over that before I added the remaining cheese.. Three of us ate 1/2 of the casserole. Will definitely make this again and again!
